The primary goal of Shunyi district, in the northeast of Beijing City, is the development of the industrial economy. To achieve this, the government's strategy is focused on the construction of industrial parks and other large-scale construction projects, as well as investment in innovation and enterprise. The district's economy is now centered on car manufacturing, electronic telecommunications, urban industries, equipment manufacturing and the development of new construction materials. Between 2006 and 2008, Shunyi district achieved both annual GDP and sales income of over a hundred billion RMB for three consecutive years. There are 283 companies offering industrial design and R&D capability based in the district, plus 19 that have been certified as industrial technology centers at city-level or above. These include five national centers, three national labs; and additionally they have developed seven Red Star Design award-winning products. The current automotive design community is represented mainly by Beijing Automotive Technology Center, CH-Auto and Beijing Hyundai R&D Center.
